In an interview with the Polish Newspaper Wyborcza, the Polish president said he would seriously consider a bill to introduce anti-gay propaganda legislation. (This article has a copyright disclaimer, see bellow)
Tomorrow, Poland celebrates 100 years of independence. The biggest challenge, according to the Polish president for Poland at the moment is dealing with the division ‘”between supporters of liberal democracy and Christian democracy”. He sees the supporters of liberalism as extremists “who want to allow everything”.
He told that journalists “abuse their freedom” to promote “gender ideology or homosexual relationships”. Therefore, “if it is well-written” he would consider introducing a anti-gay propaganda bill.
Duda loves Russia?!
In 2013, Russia introduced an anti-gay propaganda bill. This bill made it prohibited to promote homosexuality near minors. “The current Polish government suspect the Russian government of murdering their previous president Lech Kaczynski in 2010, but seems to have no problems with copy-pasting their illiberal policies.”, according to Rémy Bonny, a political scientist specialised in LGBTI in Central and Eastern Europe.
A divided country
This is the third time in half a year that a high-ranking Polish government official attacks the LGBTI-community (see earlier). “Since the reforms of the judiciary in Poland and the decline in rule of law, we see that the Polish government feels itself more comfortable to attack the LGBTI-community.”
Poland knows a big division between its cities and countryside. “While in the bigger cities like Warsaw, a very progressive and queer scene is developing, the opposite is happening on the countryside. The current government gets most of their votes on the countryside. These attacks on the LGBTI-community are a political strategy to win the votes of the people living in the Polish countryside.”, Bonny continues.
Time for change!?
Opinion polls sometimes suggest conflicting opinions. Earlier this year, 55% of the Polish population agreed with the judgement of the European Court of Justice in the Coman v. Romania Case. At the end of last month, research of the Pew Research Center revealed that only 32% of the Poles are in favour of same-sex marriage.
In September, the openly gay politician Robert Biedron announced that he will start a social and political movement against the right-wing conservatives. He didn’t exclude to run for presidency one day. “Biedron is very popular amongst young people. Opinion polls show that young and city people are very LGBTI-friendly. This means that the fight for equality is not impossible.”, Bonny ends.
